Mr. White, my name is Chris Irvine, and my Brother was a Lancer in '69-'70. Seldon Irvine. I am sad to tell you that Seldon passed away last night (April 1, 2021). I wanted to let his Brother's in Arms know.

Note from Ted some time back.

Ted Irvine (lancer16dg@...) Ron Defrain, Mr. Jones, Mr. Persinger, and myself were promised silver stars for an Emergency extraction on 2-12-70 of a LRRP team inside North Vietnam. We took heavy fire in and coming out of the LZ with many, many holes in the helicopter, and knocked out all radios except intercom. Miraculously, only 2 of the LRRPs were hit and I received some minor wounds. I don't think any of us got any valor award for that mission...

I did receive the Purple Heart sometime later, and someone put a Bronze Star medal on my bunk while I was out flying one day but I never got any orders, and it is not on my DD 214.

I think Air medals were awarded for number of hours flown...something like 1 for every 50 hours of direct support (Combat) and 1 for every 75 hours of indirect support. Not sure of those numbers. I wound up with 9 Air Medals although only one is listed on the DD214. That’s just the way the Army works, I guess.

Ted

It is with a heavy heart I share the story. Ted and I first met as door gunners with the Lancers and flew many of the same missions. Ted and I found each other 35 years later after Vietnam in Florida, Ted being from Clearwater and I would spend the winters in Saint Petersburg. Ted loved the Snowbird reunions of the 101st in Tampa and attended many of them. There is a great picture taken a few years back at one of the snowbird reunions in the CTB book under reunions, Chas Grabon, Dr. Strickler, Lanny, me and Ted and there is some other great pictures of Ted also in the book. I remember Ted as a fearless door gunner and often shared our experiences, you are clear left/clear right, so Long my friend, you will be missed. Daniel T Bush, Bushwacker 651, Once a Lancer always a Lancer!
